Senate Confirms HUD and Treasury Nominees

The U.S. Senate yesterday confirmed by voice vote several of President Trumpโ€™s nominees for key housing and tax policy positions, including: Neal Rackleff, to be HUD Assistant Secretary for Community Planning and Development; Anna Farias, to be HUD Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity; and David Kautter, to serve as Assistant Secretary of Treasury for Tax Policy. The three nominees were passed as part of a broader package of 65 nominees spanning a variety of federal agencies.

Indiana Announces Indianapolis Integrated Supportive Housing Initiative

Whitaker to Testify on Affordable Housing at Senate Finance Committee Hearing

NCSHA President Grant Whitaker, who serves as president and chief executive officer of the Utah Housing Corporation, will testify on behalf of NCSHA before the Senate Finance Committee at a hearing on Americaโ€™s Affordable Housing Crisis: Challenges and Solutions. The hearing will be broadcast live on the Committeeโ€™s website, and will also be available there for streaming thereafter.

The Senate Banking Committee voted during executive session July 27 to approve the nominations of six Trump Administration nominees for positions in the Departments of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Treasury, and Commerce.

Strong HOME and Section 8 Outcomes in Senate Appropriations Committee-Approved FY 2018 Bill

On July 27, the Senate Appropriations Committee unanimously approved its Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 Transportation and Housing and Urban Development (THUD) funding bill, providing $950 million for the HOME Investment Partnerships program (HOME) and fully funding Section 8 rental assistanceโ€”strong outcomes that NCSHA and other program stakeholders helped achieve in a difficult fiscal environment.

House Committee Unanimously Approves Bill to Classify Municipal Bonds as High-Quality Liquid Assets

The House Financial Services Committee on July 25 unanimously voted to report the Municipal Finance Support Act of 2017, H.R. 1624, to the full House of Representatives for consideration. The legislation, introduced by Representative Luke Messer (R-IN), would allow large banks to count some of their municipal bond investments, including tax-exempt housing bonds, as high-quality liquid assets (HQLAs) under federal bank liquidity standards. NCSHA and several other state and local organizations supported the bill.
