CDC Eviction Moratorium Through June 30, 2021

Effective January 31, 2021, this order from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) extends the moratorium on evictions for nonpayment of rent until March 31, 2021. The CDC initially ordered a moratorium on evictions for nonpayment of rent on September 4, 2020, lasting until December 31, 2020, due to the public health implications of eviction during the COVID-19 pandemic. Congress acted to extend until January 31, 2021, the CDC eviction moratorium in the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021. This CDC order further extends the moratorium through the end of the first quarter of calendar year 2021.

NCSHA Joins Industry Letter Advocating for Homeowner Assistance Fund

On February 8, 2021, more than 350 national and local organizations, including NCSHA, sent this letter to Congressional leaders urging them to provide $25 billion in direct assistance through the Homeowner Assistance Fund to homeowners hurt by the COVID-19 pandemic. The bulk of these funds would be deployed through state housing finance agencies.

Homeowner Assistance Fund (S.254)

This legislation, introduced by Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) with lead cosponsors Sherrod Brown (D-OH), and Patrick Leahy (D-VT), would authorize a $75 billion Homeowner Assistance Fund at the Department of the Treasury, which would be administered at the state level to help struggling homeowners avoid foreclosure and utility shut-offs.ย
