Brookline Affordable Housing Community for Senior Citizens and Residents with Disabilities Will See Extensive Renovations and the Extension of Affordability with the Closing of $25 Million in MassHousing Financing
MassHousing has provided $25 million in financing to the Brookline Housing Authority (BHA) to provide significant improvements to the 100-unit Arthur O’Shea House located at 61 Park Street in Coolidge Corner. The MassHousing financing will allow the BHA to make comprehensive renovations to the property, which is home to lower-income senior citizens and residents with disabilities, and to help ensure affordability at the property in perpetuity.

In 1971, then US Senator Fritz Hollings said, “Poverty is a wheel with several spokes. On this wheel you've got the spoke of health, the spoke of housing, job training, job opportunity and rehabilitation.” At that time, hunger was seen as one of the state’s most pressing problems. Today a different challenge dominates the state (and nation)—a growing, pressing need for available and affordable housing.
SDHDA Awards Dick Werner with Friend of Housing Award
South Dakota Housing Development Authority (SDHDA) presented its “Friend of Housing” Award to Dick Werner at the annual statewide housing conference. This is the twentieth year of SDHDA presenting the award to an individual who has made a commitment to affordable housing in South Dakota through their contributions, achievements and vision. As a former legislator and county commissioner, Werner spent many years advocating the importance of affordable housing all across South Dakota.
Ribbon Cutting Marks Completion of Major Renovation of Affordable Apartments in Camden
New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency (NJHMFA) Executive Director Charles A. Richman, local officials and The Michaels Organization today celebrated the completion of the major renovation of 64 townhomes that will preserve historic properties and affordable homes for families in Camden. Cooper Plaza Historic Townhomes involved the restoration of a five-block section of homes near Cooper University Hospital and the city’s downtown business district, close to jobs, transportation, shopping and schools.
Governor Wolf Announces New Funding to Help Create a New Shopping Center with Supermarket in Reading
Governor Tom Wolf today announced that CCG has completed a NMTC transaction of up to $8 million to rehabilitate a former automotive dealership site into a mixed-use retail shopping center in Reading. “This large, vacant parcel of land was having a negative effect on nearby neighborhoods, discouraging investment and reducing home values,” said Gov. Wolf.
Louisiana Housing Corporation Earns National Recognition for First Connections Conference
The National Council of State Housing Agencies (NCSHA) has recognized the Louisiana Housing Corporation (LHC) for outstanding work on its inaugural Connections conference, held in Baton Rouge in April. The national award acknowledges LHC’s commitment to helping elected leaders and housing professionals learn, share and develop effective initiatives that address affordable housing challenges.
Ribbon Cutting Marks Opening of Mixed-Income Apartments in Camden
A ribbon-cutting ceremony today celebrated the completion of the transformation of The Pierre, a nearly 90-year-old Art Deco building in the city’s Cooper Street Historic District, into 32 mixed-income apartments funded in part by the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency (NJHMFA). NJHMFA Executive Director Charles A. Richman attended. The Pierre, a six-story building at 306 Cooper St., was built in 1932 as a hotel and was later converted into an apartment building.
Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development Conducts Largest Bond Issuance in the Agency’s History
Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development Secretary Kenneth C. Holt announced that the department conducted the largest mortgage revenue bond issuance in the history of the agency. The department's bond-issuing entity, the Community Development Administration, issued more than $347 million under the Residential Revenue Bond program. Proceeds of the bond sales through that program are primarily used to finance mortgage loans to first-time homebuyers through the state's Maryland Mortgage Program.
Financial Assistance Available for Homeowners Recovering from Natural Disasters
SDHDA today recited that Housing Opportunity Funds (HOF) remain available to aid in recovery efforts for households impacted by the 2019 natural disasters. Financial assistance available for the disaster support includes cleanup or removal of debris; mold remediation; restoration; purchases of major appliances lost due to disaster (i.e., hot-water heater, furnace, etc.); rent payments; utility security deposits for displaced households; and downpayment assistance for the purchase of a housing unit.
