SDHDA Awards $9 Million for Affordable Housing in South Dakota
PIERRE, SD — South Dakotans’ will be seeing additional housing development and preservation across the state. South Dakota Housing Development Authority’s (SDHDA) Board of Commissioners approved the award of more than $9 million in funding for housing activities.
The developments will receive $2.7 million in Housing Tax Credits, $3.7 million in HOME Investment Partnership Program funds, $1.2 million in Housing Opportunity Funds and $1.4 million in Housing Trust Funds.
The 21 projects funded will provide South Dakotans with 249 newly constructed multifamily housing units, four single-family homes, 30 rehabilitated multifamily housing units, and assistance with homelessness prevention, homeowner rehabilitation and downpayment and closings costs.
”Each year we have a high level of competition for our housing development funds,” said Executive Director Mark Lauseng, ”and this year was no exception with SDHDA receiving 35 applications requesting more than $15 million.”
Funded recipients will include multifamily developments in Eagle Butte, Madison, Rapid City, Sioux Falls, Sisseton, and Yankton. Funded single-family developments will be located in Rapid City and Sioux Falls.
”The projects funded will result in over $33 million in total development costs, preserving and strengthening South Dakota’s housing stock,” said David Pummel, SDHDA board chairman. ”They will help low-income families, elderly residents, individuals with disabilities, and previously incarcerated individuals with a place to call home.”

Development summary: The acquisition and rehabilitation of three apartment buildings containing 30 housing units with USDA Rural Development Section 515 project-based rental assistance. There are 12 two-bedroom units and 18 three-bedroom units. Unit improvements include new kitchens, bathrooms, appliances, light fixtures, paint, new heaters and air conditioners. Building improvements include new windows, entry doors, attic insulation, siding, light fixtures, sidewalks, parking lot resurface, community room, playground equipment, and a basketball court.
