Portland Welcomes 63 New Affordable Apartments

Developed by the Szanton Company and Financed by Mainehousing the Development Offers New Housing Near Portland’s Major Recreation Complex

PORTLAND — August 20th at 2:00 p.m. marks the Grand Opening of 45 Dougherty, a 63-unit low-income apartment building, located at 45 Dougherty Court, Portland, Maine.

The property is adjacent to Dougherty Field and the Kiwanis Community Pool where there is a skateboard park, outdoor public swimming pool, basketball court, kids’ playground, and baseball fields.

Speakers at the event will include Portland Mayor Mark Dion, MaineHousing Director Dan Brennan, State Senator Jill Duson, and Evernorth President Nancy Owens.

Wednesday’s celebration occurs after the building has already developed a waiting list, having all units reserved before it even opened.

“MaineHousing is proud to be a part of this project bringing affordable housing where people work and have access to public transportation and other supports, especially when an additional 84,000 homes are needed in the state by 2030,” said MaineHousing Director Dan Brennan.

The building has units with one, two, and three bedrooms, as well as ready access to the neighboring recreation facilities, making it very family friendly in an environment where three-bedroom apartments are rare.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer this affordable housing where children and adults can use the complex without having to cross the street or even a driveway!  I’m a strong believer in family and wellness. I hope the bicycle storage, fitness room, community room, and space to run and play helps build strong families and healthy residents here in Portland,” said Nathan Szanton, President of The Szanton Company, the developer.

“We’re happy and relieved to see housing from this project become available and help our residents get into reasonable, family-focused housing.”  – Portland Mayor Mark Dion.

The Szanton Company and Maine Cooperative Development Partners (MCDP) are working together to develop the 3.35-acre lot sold by the City to foster affordable housing.

“We’re happy and relieved to see housing from this project become available and help our residents get into reasonable, family-focused housing,” said Portland Mayor Mark Dion.

“I’m very proud to have this building be my last development with The Szanton Company as I switch to property management. From the location to the amenities I think we have a great foundation for our tenants. As MCDP finishes their phases I anticipate a great community flourishing here,” said Szanton Company Development Officer Kristin Martin.

The event is free and open to the public. After the speakers at 2 p.m., there will be self-guided tours of the building and grounds, including one of the affordable condos being developed by MCDP.  Light refreshments will be served.
