KHC Celebrates National Homeownership Month in June

FRANKFORT, Kentucky — In honor of June as National Homeownership Month, Kentucky Housing Corporation (KHC) is recognizing all of the partners who are helping to spread affordable, accessible homeownership opportunities throughout Kentucky.

For over 50 years, KHC has invested in affordable housing solutions in the Commonwealth, providing first-time homebuyers who qualify competitively priced mortgage products, down payment assistance up to $10,000, and Mortgage Credit Certificates (MCC) that provide a tax credit up to 20 percent of the annual mortgage interest.

In Fiscal Year 2022, KHC provided 3,339 home loans for a loan volume of $537.5 million, $17.7 million in down payment assistance, and $115.7 million in MCC. KHC worked with over 110 different lenders and over 600 loan officers.

“We believe that homeownership is a foundation for success,” said Jaime Rice, managing director for Single Family Programs. “KHC provides Kentuckians stability and a chance to build generational wealth. Some of the people who use our products are the first in their families to purchase a home. Some thought homeownership would never be possible. But they all share a deep sense of accomplishment and anticipation for a more prosperous future.”

To begin the homebuying journey, Kentuckians should contact an approved lender in their county. These trained loan officers will connect prospective homebuyers to the programs and resources to help them achieve their homeownership dream.

“It means everything to me that I can do this,” said Naomi Moore about buying a home with a KHC mortgage and down payment assistance. “It wouldn’t have been possible without Kentucky Housing Corporation. It’s so nice to know that there are programs out there, and that they want to see people succeed and be able to meet their goals.”

KHC also stepped up to help Kentuckians stay in their homes. The Homeownership Assistance Fund (HOAF) provides homeowners impacted by COVID up to $60,000 in one-time grants to pay delinquent mortgages, utility bills, homeowner’s insurance, and taxes. KHC has disbursed $21 million through HOAF.

And in the wake of the tornadoes in western Kentucky and flooding in eastern Kentucky, KHC has been investing in rehousing individuals and families through partners, such as Habitat for Humanity in Bowling Green/Warren County, Housing Development Alliance in Hazard, and HOMES, Inc. in Whitesburg, who are constructing homes and providing homes for those displaced.

Throughout the month of June, KHC will celebrate National Homeownership Month on its social media accounts, blog and podcast. View stories and information on KHC’s blog or social media: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn; and listen to stories on Bringing it Home, a new podcast from KHC
