HUD Accepting Entries for 19th Annual HUD Secretary’s Opportunity and Empowerment Award

HUD and the American Planning Association (APA) recently announced they are accepting entries for the 19th annual HUD Secretary’s Opportunity and Empowerment Award.

The HUD Secretary’s Opportunity and Empowerment Award recognizes a community or plan, program, or project that demonstrates improved quality of life for low- and moderate-income residents.  Award submissions should demonstrate how they have overcome community issues such as urban blight, job creation, housing production and preservation, and transit mobility and transportation options.  Additionally, the entry must show collaborative efforts with other entities, both private and public.

The judges place an emphasis on the entry demonstrating a direct correlation between the program or project and improved standards of living.  In addition to showing tangible results, entries must establish excellence in the following areas:  planning, innovation, and transferability.  The plan, program, or project submitted for the award should have been in place for a minimum of three years.

Judging for the awards will take place during November, with the award being presented at APA’s National Planning Conference in Phoenix, which takes place April 2-5, 2015.  Award submissions are currently being accepted through APA’s website.  The deadline for online award entries is September 11, 2015 at 5:00 p.m. (central).
