Habitat for Humanity of Henderson Dedicates Homes 82 and 83

FRANKFORT, Kentucky — Whitney Howard and her five kids received the keys to their new home, Habitat of Henderson House #83, at a ceremony Friday afternoon attended by friends, family, and other well-wishers. This is the second Habitat of Henderson home dedication in as many weeks. House #82 was dedicated Friday, May 17, 2024, for Travis Littrell and Lettie Viars.
“It means a lot for me to be standing on my front porch,” said Whitney, “because it’s been a long journey for me.”
In December 2021, the Howards were approved for a 3-bedroom, 1-bathroom house, but after Whitney was granted custody of her two nieces and two nephews, she worked with Habitat to secure a 4-bedroom, 2-bathroom house on a different lot in Henderson.
“It doesn’t feel real, but it’s real,” said Whitney. “I’m just grateful and blessed.”
Houses #82 and #83 are part of Habitat for Humanity of Henderson’s flagship homeownership program. In order to qualify, applicants must demonstrate financial need; a willingness to participate in the construction or related volunteer service; and the ability to pay the mortgage. Approved applicants are able to finance their homes through Habitat at zero percent interest for terms of 15 to 30 years.
Kentucky Housing Corporation (KHC) allocated $40,000 for each home. Support also came from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati and Field and Main Bank.
“We are at unprecedented times in the state of Kentucky,” said Keli Reynolds, assistant director of HCA Single-Family Programs at KHC. “We don’t have enough housing in all income brackets. When we are looking at funding projects, we are trying to build housing stock in our state, and this partnership with Habitat for Humanity has been invaluable to us.”
