Louisiana Housing Corporation Recognizes Hunger and Homelessness Awareness in November

Homelessness is every day, not just a holiday. In Louisiana, there are over 3,000 people experiencing homelessness, and roughly 1 in 7 people in our state struggle to provide a healthy meal for themselves or their household. It is a fundamental human right to have access to food and shelter, but sadly, hunger and homelessness is a prevalent growing problem across our state. The Louisiana Housing Corporation (LHC) is collaborating with various community partners throughout the state to provide resources, support, and amplify efforts to put an end to homelessness.
Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is an annual program where people come together nationwide to draw attention to the problems of hunger and homelessness. With over 37 million Americans living below the poverty level, many live on the edge, forced to choose between necessities like purchasing food, paying rent, or going to the doctor.
This year, the LHC is joining and amplifying the work and dedication of community partners throughout the month of November. Participating groups spend the week holding a series of service, educational, and advocacy events. Join us as we support and engage with organizations and state agencies across the state to bring awareness to hunger and homelessness in Louisiana.
In addition, the LHC will be accepting nominations and will award six deserving non-profit organizations, businesses, and individuals with a Service Champion Award, to those who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to serving Louisiana’s homeless population by celebrating their service in their community. The Service Champion Award presents an excellent opportunity to recognize those who have consistently gone above and beyond to serve the vulnerable members of our community.
This award acknowledges the dedication, compassion, and commitment of those who have provided essential services, support, and resources to those in need, and celebrates the selflessness of those who have made it their mission to improve people’s lives, one person at a time. Please note there is no minimum time that a non-profit, business, or individual has served in their parish. Every nomination will need to select a category:
- Prevention
- Education
- Rapid Re-Housing
- Emergency Shelter
- Diversion
- Community Advocate
- Other
LHC will accept nominations for the Service Champion Awards until Wednesday, July 31st, 2024, by 5:00 pm CST., and the awards will be presented during the annual Louisiana Housing Conference. We welcome nominations from individuals and organizations demonstrating outstanding leadership and consistency in combating homelessness in Louisiana.
LHC is accepting applications online only at www.lhc.la.gov/homelessness-solutions.
