KHC Celebrates Grand Opening of Stonewall Terrace in Lexington

FRANKFORT, Kentucky — Kentucky Housing Corporation (KHC) joined Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton, Representative Cherlynn Stevenson, Senator Reginald Thomas, and others on Friday, April 21, 2023, to dedicate Stonewall Terrace, a 26-unit permanent supportive housing community in Lexington developed through a partnership between AVOL and Winterwood, Inc.

“This project not only increases our city’s housing inventory,” said Mayor Gorton, “it also provides support to low-income, medically vulnerable residents. It’s very special in that regard.”

She commended AVOL’s leadership in Lexington, a city that historically has been on the forefront of LGBTQ+ advocacy in Kentucky.

Sutton’s Landing was funded in part through KHC’s innovation pool, which is reserved for projects that identify a unique community need and address it holistically through collaboration. Overall, KHC allocated $470,000 in Low-Income Housing Tax Credits and $300,000 from the Affordable Housing Trust Fund.

“This facility is going to serve our most vulnerable neighbors,” said Sam Thorner, KHC’s general counsel, “and we are really proud to be part of the team of people to help make this happen.”

The first resident to move in, James Scott, was invited to say a few words at the ceremony. He spoke about his journey to Stonewall Terrace, his elation when he received the keys, and the importance of a washer and dryer—provided in every apartment—during the job search.

“I am so proud to be a tenant here,” he said. “I am grateful for whomever came up with this idea to make this a reality. It’s been a game changer.”
