Wendy K. Smith, deputy executive director of Housing Programs for Kentucky Housing Corporation (KHC), is driven by the fact that affordable housing leads to stable families and thriving communities. She leads statewide affordable housing efforts such as home development for first-time homebuyers, homelessness solutions, rental assistance to very low-income Kentuckians, and asset management for multifamily properties across the Commonwealth.
With over 23 years’ experience in affordable housing and community development, Wendy joined KHC’s leadership team in 2013. She has been instrumental in driving initiatives such as strategic business planning, preservation of aging multifamily properties, proactive asset management, and multifamily policy development. Wendy understands program design, project finance, and the importance of partnerships in fulfilling KHC’s mission.
Before joining KHC, Wendy worked for 12 years as freelance housing and community development consultant in Midwestern and Southern states with a focus on HUD technical assistance and training. She has authored national guides for HUD and NeighborWorks America and has developed project feasibility and underwriting templates for nonprofits and municipalities in many states.
Wendy is knowledgeable in the HOME Program and has a background in real estate consulting and municipal HUD program management. She was executive director for a Dayton, Ohio community development corporation, and worked as a neighborhood community organizer in Cincinnati.
Wendy has a BA from Miami University and a Masters in Community Planning from the University of Cincinnati.
