In 2021, NCSHA convened national leaders to lay out what it will take to create a more racially just housing system in America. Recent years have seen meaningful progress, with more work remaining.

On February 28, NCSHA will convene its second national symposium to take stock of where we are and illuminate leadership in areas of promise and potential, including:

  • Establishing and scaling special purpose credit programs,
  • Creating and preserving housing wealth in Black and Brown neighborhoods,
  • Building credit, assets, and opportunity for low-income renters, and
  • Empowering developers of color.

Janis Bowdler

Opening Keynote Speaker

Janis Bowdler is the U.S. Department of the Treasuryā€™s first Counselor for Racial Equity. She has spent the last two decades advancing economic equity solutions for communities of color and breaking down the barriers that underpin the disparities in wealth and financial security by race and gender. Growing up in Northeast Ohio, she saw firsthand how neighborhood conditions impacted the life opportunities of her family and neighbors, often resulting in an uneven playing field that has left communities of color and our most vulnerable communities at a stark disadvantage. Drawing on her lived experience and two decades of working in coalition with Black, Latinx, and AAPI communities, Janis has dedicated her career to dismantling the structural and institutional racism that has allowed the racial wealth gap to persist and widen.

Closing Keynote Speaker

Samir Goel is the co-founder and co-CEO of Esusu, the financial technology platform unleashing the power of data to bridge the racial wealth gap and dismantling barriers to housing for working families. Esusuā€™s platform provides rent reporting, property management analytics, and rental assistance to unlock financial access and stability for renters and property owners. Named to the Forbes Fintech 50 Most Innovative Companies List, Esusuā€™s recent $1 billion valuation in fundraising makes it one of the few Black-owned startups to reach unicorn status globally.
