    The Trump Administration yesterday called on Congress to forgive a portion of the National Flood Insurance Program’s (NFIP) debt. The Administration also proposed that Congress enact several reforms to NFIP to improve its solvency and encourage private participation in the flood insurance market.

    The U.S. Senate earlier today confirmed Pamela Patenaude’s nomination to serve as Deputy Secretary for Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The final vote approving Patenaude’s nomination was 80-17, with all Republicans and most Democrats voting in favor.

    On September 8, President Donald Trump signed a legislative package including provisions to provide more than $15 billion in disaster recovery aid, raise the debt ceiling, and enact a continuing resolution to fund federal programs after the September 30 end of this fiscal year until December 8, 2017. The president's signature came after House lawmakers cleared the bill (HR 601) by a 316-90 vote earlier in the day. The Senate approved the package the day before by a 80-17 vote.

    House Financial Services Committee Chair Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) recently released a discussion draft summarizing legislation he intends to introduce soon that will reauthorize and reform the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). NFIP’s authorization is scheduled to expire at the end of fiscal year (FY) 2017. Hensarling says that NFIP reform will be one the Committee’s top priorities this year.

    Late yesterday, senior Ways and Means Committee member Pat Tiberi (R-OH) and Committee Ranking Member Richard Neal (D-MA) introduced the Affordable Housing Credit Improvement Act of 2017, H.R. 1661. The bill is companion legislation to the bill Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-UT) introduced earlier this month.
