Lisa S. Bowman has been an association executive for more than 25 years. Currently, she is the director of communications for the National Council of State Housing Agencies (NCSHA, ncsha.org), a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization created by the nation’s state Housing Finance Agencies to advocate at the federal level for affordable housing. In this role, she oversees strategic communications using digital and print media to build awareness of the association, advance its mission, grow membership, and increase program attendance.
Prior to coming to NCSHA in 2016, Bowman served for two years as the chief administrative officer for the National Cooperative Business Association, providing counsel to staff regarding management and promotion of the association’s programs, products, initiatives, and resources.
Bowman worked for the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) for 16 years, serving 12 years in the role of Senior Vice President with planning, operational, and staff and volunteer management responsibilities. SMPS is a 6,000-member professional society serving the architectural, engineering, and construction industry in the United States and Canada. Throughout her time with SMPS, Bowman oversaw marketing and communications and was the publisher and editor for the association’s award-winning journal, as well as books and resources. Bowman also was the staff director for SMPS’s annual conference.
Bowman began her career as an editor and writer for a hospitality management consultancy. In 1992, she moved into association management and communications, joining the staff of APICS, a 70,000-member educational society association representing the manufacturing industry. She is a graduate of the University of Maryland at College Park and a member of ASAE.
