About the SC Housing Trust Fund
The Fund, created by the General Assembly in 1992, with the State Treasurer designated as its Trustee, was landmark legislation for South Carolina since it marked the state's first commitment of tax dollars for affordable housing. This action placed South Carolina among the leaders in the nation for its dedication to the housing needs of its less fortunate citizens, according to the Fall, 1991 issue of The Housing Trust Fund Project, a nationally-published periodical from the Center for Community Change, actually raising South Carolina’s ranking from 50th to 9th in the county. The Trust Fund has been active ever since.
Capital for the Fund is generated by a portion of the deed transfer fee. The Fund encourages other leveraged funding and can only be used to serve households that are at or below 80 percent of the county median income.
For more information on the Housing Trust Fund or other SC State Housing programs and initiatives, visit the agency’s website www.schousing.com. SC State Housing is the state’s leading provider of capital for affordable housing and is a self-supporting agency of state government.
