(Salem) Funds are still available to help low-income Oregon homeowners replace old appliances, according to Oregon Housing and Community Services, the state agency that runs the Appliance Rebate Program. The agency expects to distribute approximately 2,000 vouchers to qualified homeowners on a first-come, first-served basis, until they run out.
“Although funding is limited, there is still time to take advantage of the State Appliance Rebate Program,” said Melissa Torgerson, Energy Policy and Programs Coordinator at Oregon Housing and
Community Services. “This is an excellent opportunity for Oregon homeowners to replace older
appliances with more energy efficient alternatives.”
Oregonians who own their own homes and earn less than 60 percent of the state’s median income may
qualify. Residents are urged to apply soon for vouchers before they run out.
Earlier this year, OHCS began providing eligible low-income Oregon homeowners with a 70 percent
reimbursement (up to $2,000) for ENERGY STAR heat pumps and furnaces purchased on or after
January 1, 2010.
On July 1, 2010, the appliance program expanded to include ENERGY STAR water heaters,
refrigerators, dishwashers and clothes washers.
Homeowners who meet the income requirements and qualify for a voucher must purchase and pay for
eligible ENERGY STAR appliances using a certified contractor. They then redeem the vouchers for 70
percent of the purchase price, up to a specified maximum. Old appliances must be legally recycled in
order to receive rebate funds.
