Single mom Maria Ruberto became a first-time homebuyer last summer with the help of the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority HomeOpenersm Plus program. Today, Maria lives in her Aurora home with her daughters. "I'm happy," says Maria when asked how her homeownership experience is impacting her life. "The house isn't huge, but it’s perfect for me and my kids."
Maria has lived in Colorado for 20 years. She recently decided it was time to buy a home after securing herself and her family with a new, stable job. Maria completed training in document scanning and management, working for a year scanning mammograms. Following her training, Maria was hired by a fast-growing company.
Maria's realtor, Michael Miller with Keller Williams, referred Maria to CHFA. She connected with CHFA lender Cherry Creek Mortgage and was on her way. CHFA was instrumental in helping provide Maria with down payment assistance. "Without CHFA, I couldn't have put together all of the down payment. I used the money I saved to buy our appliances," says Maria.
Maria also enjoyed CHFA's homebuyer education course, which she completed online. "It took me all day Saturday to finish,” said Maria. “I started at 3:15 p.m. and worked on it until midnight. I learned a lot."
Maria says that she's already recommended CHFA to other prospective buyers. "I've told my sister and my friend to get a CHFA loan. You were the people who helped me. Without you, I'd still be in an apartment. Thank you. We are very happy."
