No one in Tamela Nelloms’ family had ever owned their own home.  Tamela, a single mother of three, said that even so, always in the back of her mind—no matter what was going on around her—was the dream of buying a home for her family.

Luck was on her side when she was referred to Pat Gaver, Florida Housing’s top-producing loan officer for the First-Time Homebuyer Program, who helped Tamela purchase her first home in Tallahassee. Nelloms also used down payment assistance from Homeownership Pool funds and the Tallahassee Lenders’ Consortium (TLC). Nelloms was able to purchase a 1,513-square-foot house with four bedrooms and two bathrooms.

“If I didn’t have the assistance from Florida Housing, my family would not be in our new home, and possibly renting much longer than I expected,” Nelloms said. “I needed to have a home that would allow my family to live comfortably. [Now,] we have all the space we need.”

As the first homeowner in her family, Tamela faced resistance from those closest to her. This, she felt, was a byproduct of the years of misunderstanding that her family had about the homebuying process and what it means to be a homeowner.

“It’s been said that ‘home is not where you live, but where they understand you,’” she said.
