Donna Peery is 61 years old and has been on disability since 2008.  Sick for several years with throat cancer, Donna was laid off from work and later lost her home of 21 years because of medical bills.

Donna desperately sought housing for months before finding out about Bridgewater II, a new affordable housing development financed by the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation (KHRC).  She moved into her new unit in March 2010.

Financed by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act , Bridgewater consists of 48 new, energy-efficient apartments for low-income families in Haysville, Kansas. The development received $3 million in Tax Credit Exchange funds. Developers estimate funding for Bridgewater provided more than 100 construction-related jobs in the community.

Today, healthy and happily ensconced in her new apartment, Donna says, “I have so much to be thankful for. This apartment means everything! I’m blessed to have this beautiful apartment.”

At the ribbon cutting event for Bridgewater, Donna wept tears of happiness and relief. “People complain about the system not working, but there are programs out there helping people.”
