Donyelle Ashton and her family were displaced from their home in New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. After moving several times, they have finally found a safe, comfortable spot to call home in a rental community in Monroe, Louisiana, financed with Low Income Housing Tax Credits from the Louisiana Housing Finance Agency. Donyelle has been in the community for over a year now, and lives there with her six children.

“It's been a long time since we’ve been in a house, as opposed to very cramped apartments and townhouses, and just having the space to let the children run around has been good for their self-esteem.”

“We moved to Monroe back in 2005 and we were in a hotel for a while after we moved from New Orleans. If you can imagine all of us, it was four children back then, but we couldn’t move, or breathe—everyone was always in a bad mood.”

“The neighborhood is quiet and nice, there hasn’t been any kind of unusual problems, and it’s just a happy neighborhood. Kids running around, playing, riding their bikes…It’s been good.”

“I’m finally at a point where I think we have a nice, stable place to live. Now I feel confident that when my children come home, they know this is home, and this will be their home for several years to come.”
