On July 27, the Obama Administration announced plans to host a Conference on the Future of Housing Finance on August 17.  The event will seek public input from a variety of stakeholders to help the Administration develop a comprehensive housing finance reform proposal for delivery to Congress by January 2011.  The Administration has said, and Congress required in the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, that it will offer options in January 2011.

NCSHA is pursuing options for its and HFAs’ involvement in this conference and future forums the Administration will hold on this issue.  We will distribute more information on these options soon.
The Administration’s announcement says it has already begun the work of developing proposals for reforming our nation's system of housing finance.  In March 2010, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan each delivered testimony before the House Financial Services Committee on the Obama Administration's ongoing work in this area, and the broad principles that would guide those efforts.

In April 2010, HUD and Treasury published a Federal Register notice soliciting public input on the future of the housing finance system and the Government Sponsored Enterprises (GSEs), Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.  The notice received more than 300 responses from a broad cross-section of stakeholders, including a response from NCSHA.  In the months ahead, the Administration will continue to gather input from stakeholders through a variety of events.
