On May 28, the Campaign for Housing and Community Development Funding (CHCDF) – a coalition of diverse organizations, including NCSHA, concerned with the housing needs of low- and moderate-income households and the community development needs of our nation – sent a letter to the Chairmen and Ranking Members of the Senate and House Appropriations Committees. The letter urges the committees, as they make decisions about FY 2011 appropriations allocations, to allocate enough budget authority to the Transportation-HUD Appropriations Subcommittee for a larger HUD budget.
The letter describes how the recent economic downturn has highlighted the importance of affordable housing and how programs run by HUD address the need for affordable housing and community development. The letter states that, “CHCDF believe a substantial funding increase is necessary to allow HUD to do its part to address crisis-level housing and community development problems faced by families and communities across the country.”
In addition to NCSHA, the letter was signed by 31 national organizations.
It remains unclear as to when the Appropriations Committees will begin working on appropriations bills. Neither the House nor the Senate has passed a budget resolution establishing non-binding spending ceilings for discretionary programs and establishing limits for total government revenue and mandatory spending. Such a resolution normally precedes action on annual appropriations bills.
