April 23, 2010

On April 22, HUD and Treasury published a Federal Register notice soliciting public input on a set of questions about establishing a more stable and sound housing system.  Treasury Secretary Geithner and HUD Secretary Donovan told the House Financial Services Committee during hearings over the last few weeks that the Administration would publish these questions soon.  The questions ask about the role of the federal government, what risks the federal government should bear, how the government’s approach should differ across different market segments, how the current organization of the housing finance system could be improved, how the housing finance system should support sound market practices, and how to help ensure consumers are protected from unfair, abusive or deceptive practices.

Donovan also said the Administration would hold a series of public forums later this summer and in the fall to discuss possible housing finance solutions.  The notice did not provide more information on these forums.

NCSHA is planning to submit comments to HUD and Treasury on these issues.  Please send any comments you would like included in NCSHA’s submission to Garth Rieman by June 30.
