The Iowa Finance Authority (IFA) Board of Directors today announced awards of nearly $100 million to build or rehabilitate nearly 1,300 units of affordable housing in 23 counties throughout the state. The awards were granted from the federal Housing Tax Credit program and the HOME program.

Wingate Development Corporation, which owns the Waterway Apartments, has extended the Section 8 Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) contract and the affordability on all 89 apartments for 20 years.

MassHousing announced today that it has closed a package of 10 loans that is likely
the largest private housing preservation transaction in state history. Rhode Island Homes, LLC, a subsidiary of Providence Realty Investment has borrowed $125 million from MassHousing to purchase 10 existing affordable apartment communities from their former owner, Equity Residential. Nearly one third of the 931 apartments involved were at risk of converting to market rents and being lost from the state’s inventory of affordable housing. - January 18, 2011
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded the Rhode Island Housing and Mortgage Corp. $3.1 million in funding Thursday for its lead-based paint hazard control grant program. Rhode Island Housing will use the funding to evaluate 260 homes for lead hazards, eliminate lead hazards in 233 homes, conduct outreach and education for 1,425 people and provide training to 327 individuals, according to HUD’s website.

The Jameshouse and Posthouse Apartments, which provides affordable housing for seniors and people with disabilities, will undergo major improvements including installing air conditioning throughout the properties, new windows, roofs and energy-efficient boilers. Dishwashers will be installed in most units, and bathrooms, kitchens and other finishes will be updated. MDI Limited Partnership #102 and its general partner, Gary Stenson, acquired the properties and recently started to update both historic buildings. MetroPlains Management, LLC will continue to manage the properties and oversee the improvements.
